Mul Cotton Suits: A Summer Guide to India’s Most Breathable Fabric

When the temperature crosses 40°C, most of us want two things from an outfit: it should feel like almost nothing on the skin, and it should still look put together. Mul cotton does both. It is the fabric behind many of our everyday casual suits and co-ord sets, and it is the one our customers come back for every summer.

What is mul cotton?

Mul cotton, also called mulmul, is a very fine, lightweight cotton with a soft, slightly open plain weave. The name comes from "mulmul", the word long used in India for this kind of delicate cotton. Because the yarn is fine and the weave lets air through, the fabric feels airy against the skin and drapes softly rather than standing stiff.

It is the same family of fabric that made Indian cottons famous centuries ago. Today it is woven on modern looms, which keeps it affordable for everyday wear.

Why mul cotton works so well in Indian summers

  • It breathes. The open weave lets air move through the fabric, so heat does not get trapped against your body.
  • It absorbs sweat. Like all cotton, mul draws moisture away from the skin and dries quickly in warm weather.
  • It is light. A full mul cotton kurta set weighs very little, which matters on long workdays, commutes and travel.
  • It gets softer. Mul cotton softens with every gentle wash, so a set you buy this year will feel even better next summer.
  • It takes print beautifully. The smooth, fine surface holds digital prints and block prints crisply, so florals stay sharp and colours stay true.

Mul cotton vs regular cotton, muslin and rayon

Shopping for summer ethnic wear means choosing between a handful of fabrics that sound similar. Here is how they compare.

Fabric How it feels Best for
Mul cotton Very light, soft, airy, gentle drape Peak summer, daily wear, office, travel
Regular cotton Crisper and slightly heavier Structured kurtas, everyday wear in milder weather
Muslin Smooth and fluid, often with a soft sheen Day-to-evening suits, embroidered sets
Rayon Cool and silky, drapes close to the body Easy-care casual wear

In Indian ethnic wear, "muslin" is often used for a softer, more fluid fabric than mul cotton, sometimes a blend, which is why muslin suits tend to look a little dressier. If comfort in the heat is your first priority, choose mul cotton. If you want a touch of sheen for an evening, a muslin kurta set is a good middle ground.

How to choose a mul cotton suit

Check the lining

Because mul cotton is fine, light colours can be slightly sheer. Look for a lined kurta or pair it with a cotton slip, especially for whites, pastels and yellows.

Pick a relaxed fit

Mul cotton is at its most comfortable when it has room to move. A straight or A-line kurta with an easy pant lets air circulate. Our pieces are cut relaxed, so if you are between two sizes, the size guide suggests choosing the larger one.

Go for prints or light embroidery

Heavy embellishment can weigh a fine fabric down. Digital prints, block prints and light thread or Schiffli work keep a mul cotton suit light while still looking special, like our white mul cotton Schiffli co-ord.

How to style mul cotton through the day

  • Workday: a printed mul cotton kurta set with flat kolhapuris and small studs.
  • Weekend errands: a mul co-ord set with sneakers and a canvas tote.
  • Evening: swap in a light dupatta, add jhumkas and a potli bag.

Caring for mul cotton

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, and wash dark colours separately for the first few washes. Do not wring; press the water out gently and dry in the shade so colours do not fade. A light steam or a cool iron on the reverse brings the drape back. For more detail, read our guide on caring for embroidered suits at home.

Frequently asked questions

Is mul cotton good for summer?

Yes. Mul cotton is one of the most breathable fabrics you can wear in Indian summers because it is fine, light and absorbs sweat.

Is mul cotton transparent?

Mul cotton can be slightly sheer in light colours. Choose a lined kurta or wear a slip underneath.

Does mul cotton shrink?

Like most cottons, it can shrink a little if washed in hot water or tumble dried. Wash cold and dry in the shade to keep the fit.

Is mul cotton the same as muslin?

They are related, but in Indian ethnic wear "muslin" usually describes a smoother, more fluid fabric with a soft sheen, while mul cotton is lighter and more matte.
